Working in a call center (or any business) shouldn’t be a game of telephone

Getting the wrong message isn’t funny when it’s a customer on the line. But when I can’t hear them clearly, it’s hard to figure out what they’re having trouble with and how I can help resolve their issue. It’s really frustrating.

And not just for me. It’s even worse for the customer—they feel like I’m not listening to their needs and don’t care about their issue. It affects my manager too, because it takes me twice as long as everyone else to resolve a call, and that throws her numbers off. It’s bad for everybody involved.

My workstation just wasn’t working for me.

I wear open fit hearing aids with t-coils. I also have a streamer. But because the call center’s system is older it was hard to hear anything clearly on my desk phone. The headset I had to use was monaural (that means it only had one speaker). Hearing aids have two, which makes it a lot easier for me to understand what people are saying. It’s like having to listen to a transistor radio from the 70’s when you have a killer stereo system.
